Time to volunteer

Have you always wanted to volunteer but something’s been holding you back? Maybe you think you don’t have enough time, are concerned about making a regular commitment, or just don’t know how to get started.

With volunteering roles of all shapes and sizes available across the Borough, finding something that makes a difference and fits around your interests, skills and lifestyle could be easier than you think. Step forward Woking Association of Voluntary Service (WAVS).

For over 100 years, WAVS has been encouraging and supporting voluntary work in the Borough. There’s a huge range of volunteering opportunities in and around Woking. Whether you have an hour a week to spare, an evening a month or would like to support a one-off event, WAVS are here to help you find the perfect role.

Based on Commercial Way, in the heart of Woking Town Centre, the friendly and knowledgeable team are branching out to spread the word that volunteering really does make a difference.

Nikki Burrows, one of WAVS’ regular volunteers did make the plunge. Nikki said: “I found myself at WAVS following advice given to me at JobCentre Plus. Due to variety of personal reasons, I had been out of the job market for some time and was uncertain about the strength of my skills and experiences, or even my areas of interest, were I to be in a position to begin job hunting.

“Reading the Volunteer Needed List, I was amazed at the variety of charities, organisations and groups looking for volunteers for equally varied and interesting roles. I was excited that WAVS themselves were looking for a Volunteer Co-ordinator to join the team.

“I feel really lucky to have been able to meet such a wide variety of people; all with such varied interests, skills and reasons for wanting to volunteer. Every week I learn more about and admire the different voluntary organisations in the Woking area.

“Personally, I have become more independent, gained confidence and really felt part of a team whilst doing something worthwhile."
