Short Breaks - Sorry for the short notice

Last year we engaged with over 600 people (children, young people, families, providers and practitioners) with the help of Family Voice Surrey, to find out what people want from a special educational needs and disability (SEND) short breaks service in Surrey.

Short breaks are an essential part of the support accessed by families of disabled children and young people. They promote independence, spending time with all family members, and help to reduce stress allowing families to feel relaxed and safe. By listening to residents and designing the future possibilities with them and practitioners and providers, including schools and voluntary organisations, we are now looking to turn some of the creative ideas into short breaks that support positive outcomes and meet a wide range of needs with the money available.

Our short breaks commissioning strategy is available to download via the SEND Local Offer website. The strategy outlines our plans for the commissioning of new services, making improvements to our existing services, and understanding the areas where we have the most influence by working with partners such as schools and community organisations, to improve access to SEND short break services in Surrey. We’ve also looked at the information and data available to us, what other local authorities have done or are doing, as well as spending more time on understanding the services we need to retain to help those most in need.

We would particularly encourage voluntary organisations to look at the commissioning strategy and the short breaks innovation grants—bids for grants close on 20 February. Cabinet will review the outcome of the tender process on the 27 April and agree on next steps, with a decision being made in July about which partners and providers will deliver the short breaks service.

In order to apply for Short Breaks grants you will need to register on In-tend (if you haven't already). Please see below link which will take you to the In-tend site and the grant.
