Syrian refugeevolunteers needed

Woking Borough Council is lookingfor a number of committed individuals in the Woking area to assist with the integrationof Syrian refugee families in Woking.

Moving to the UK has been a hugeadjustment for the refugees and as such, they have faced a number of challengessettling into Woking. Volunteer support will help refugees to do things forthemselves, to become more independent and to integrate into the community.

This role encompasses a widevariety of activities. On the whole, the main requirements for a volunteer willbe to provide transport to and from appointments, offer interpreting assistanceand show refugees how they can get involved with events and the community inWoking.

The ability to drive would beadvantageous to this role. Applicants who are able to drive should hold a UKdriving licence and own a fully insured car.

The ability to speak Arabic wouldbe beneficial but is not essential.

Applicants should be willing toundergo a DBS check and basic safeguarding and cultural awareness trainingbefore carrying out this role.

In return, the volunteerco-ordinator at the council will offer support where needed and be a point ofcontact for volunteers. Expenses incurred during volunteering will be paid bythe Council.

Woking Borough Council is lookingfor a number of committed individuals to practice English with Syrian refugeefamilies in Woking.

The refugees attend regularEnglish classes but would really like to learn English more quickly so thatthey can get a job and integrate themselves in the community. The families arekeen to practice their conversational skills to maximise their independence andmake friends in the local area.

We would like an ESOL trained volunteer to visit afamily in their home and provide this further English support. The ESOL (orteaching equivalent) qualification is essential. The volunteer would need toprovide their own resources (e.g. stationary).

The applicant must be able to travelto the family property independently and commit to doing so on a weekly basis.This may be during the day or in the evenings, depending on the availability ofthe applicant and the family.

Applicants should be willing toundergo a DBS check and basic safeguarding and cultural awareness trainingbefore carrying out this role.

In return, the volunteerco-ordinator at the council will offer support where needed and be a point ofcontact for volunteers.
