By wayof celebrating H.G. Wells’s legacy in Woking, the Wells in Woking Community Association, working with the support of theH.G. Wells Society, plan to hold a ‘Wells in Woking Day’ on the 21st September 2017.

Wellslived in Woking when he was at his most creative and productive,writing the famous The War of the Worlds novel set in and around Woking, and especially Horsell Common. Woking hosted ayear-long set of celebrations in 2016, the 150th anniversary of Wells’s birth and the 70th of his death. The success of these events pavesthe way for an annual ‘Wells in Woking’ event.

There will be a number of eventson 21st September 2017 led by and for the local community related toa Wells-inspired theme for 2017: Wells and Science.

  • Interactive science events aimed at Science students: 12.00-2.00 6th form and 2.30-4.30 GCSE. With support from Royal Astronomical Society, Woking Borough Council experts and Cap Gemini.

  • His Worship The Mayor Cllr Graham Cundy will formally open the public events at 4.00, followed by Street theatre held near the Martian sculpture, performed byWoking Community Play Association, at 4.15 and again at 5.30.

  • Eveningdiscussion with Michael Condron and Wesley Harland, the sculptors of ‘TheMartian’ and Wells respectively, as well as award winning Sci-Fi radio director/producers Andrew Sewell and Richard Kurti, held at the Living PlanetCentre at. 7.30

  • Remote Games Jam

We shall be taking the opportunity throughout these events to raise funds for Diabetes UK, a cause close to Wells’s heart, as he became a sufferer in later life and co-founded the charity.
